"Why is my doctor teaching meditation?"

Here’s how I answer the patients who ask me this…
Mindfulness meditation has improved my mental, physical and spiritual well being. It has sustained me through small and large stresses associated with work, relationships, health, life and death.
Having experienced the power of mindfulness, I was determined to share it with my patients. As a physician specializing in breast health and disease and as a 19 year breast cancer survivor I saw mindfulness practices restore people to greater well being than they had before their cancer.
Since 2005 I’ve taught 30 eight-week classes to almost 350 individuals and led many more students in shorter workshops. I’ve completed more than 230 hours of face-to-face instruction with Jon Kabat-Zinn PhD, the founder of MBSR, and his senior teachers. My work on teaching mindfulness to female cancer survivors has been published in the prestigious Annals of Surgical Oncology.

MBSR Explained

Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) was founded by Jon Kabat-Zinn in 1979. More than 18,000 individuals have graduated from the program he initiated at the University of Massachusetts Medical School. Additionally, MBSR is offered in 32 countries in the Americas, Europe, the Middle East, Asia, and Australia. MBSR has been successfully used with people of all ages. There is extensive research documenting the benefits of MBSR for individuals suffering with anxiety, depression, psoriasis, cancer, professional burnout, fibromyalgia, rheumatoid arthritis, chronic pain, and eating disorders, to name a few. The research also includes its use to enhance interpersonal relationships, alleviate workplace stress, and relieve stress in schoolchildren, adolescents and medical students. MBSR is widely researched, taught, and respected within the traditional medical paradigm. It requires that the teacher be a devoted student of mindfulness.
